SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability matters and, as a renewed company, we believe we have a responsibility to make good choices.
The fast-paced tradition of contemporary fashion is not the Zonen van Thor tradition. We try to work on a less-is-more approach to consumption. High quality yarns and never out of favour designs.
- Our collection is not limited to season or market. New designs are added, whilst previous designs still keep their place in the collection. There is no expiration date on your garment.
- We don't waste valuable yarn for unused stock, your garment is made by order.
- We buy the best high-end quality yarn from traditional spinners in Italy and the UK. Our goal is to make each garment to last a lifetime.
- The complete production process is performed by hand in the Netherlands, meaning no excessive international shipping and no low paid labor. This all means that each section of our garments are knitted individually, hand washed and blocked and linked together with our signature knitted seam covers, then hand-finished to achieve the finest possible execution.
Care for it well and it'll be in your wardrobe for years to come.
ABOUT
Playfully describing herself as a ‘knitwear nerd’, Amsterdam-based Annet Schukkink started knitting at the age of 16, realizing she truly loved a hands-on approach, as well as being able to construct a piece from start to finish. Fascinated with the technical aspects of knitwear, coupled with the versatility of high-end yarns, the Dutch designer gathered extensive experience within the fashion industry, working with international brands and honing her skills as a talented knitwear designer.
Frustrated with the increasing commercialism of fashion and the fact that she was spending more time sketching sweaters than actually making them, Schukkink launched ‘Zonen van Thor’ in order to reconnect with experimental design and pursue her research around high-quality yarns, timeless shapes and innovative textures. For the Dutch designer, a sweater needs to be perfect inside out and she won’t compromise when it comes to getting the best finishings.
Using mostly Italian yarns, ‘Zonen van Thor’ stays away from synthetics and focuses on noble materials instead. Seasonal designs reinterpret classic menswear staples, adding refinement and surface interest to lightweight sweaters, which are often inspired by geometric motifs. Stripes, cutouts and asymmetrical lines add energy to the simplest styles, while the designer keeps looking for new ways to do embellishment, using the yarn itself instead of adding external elements to it. A striking twin set ensemble, made out of black soft alpaca, incorporates beads within the actual pattern, adding a sense of sophistication to a familiar style. An innovative fringing technique makes simple crewneck sweaters luxurious and tactile, in contrasting colors or soft pastel shades. Pushing a genderless and unfussy approach, ‘Zonen van Thor’ envisages knitwear as a complete lifestyle, answering our need for comfort and practicality all year long.
With every sweater made locally in Amsterdam, ‘Zonen van Thor’ emphasizes the appeal of artisanal work, as well as the intrinsic value of handmade goods. Privileging a permanent collection, which keeps growing over time, Schukkink proves that fashion can be creative and innovative, while taking care of the environment, and working with carefully selected local -or European- companies.
